Over 200 police guard the site in Maleny

The Maleny community fought long and hard to keep Woolworths out of their rural Queensland town. Woolworths had to force their way in with 200 police, bulldozers and a broken agreement to sell the site back if the locals could come up with $2m. The people of Mullumbimby are just as passionate – and if Woolworths don’t turn back now, they will have a sticky bun fight on their hands.

Commissioner Hussey of the Sydney Land and Environment Court recently awarded Woolworths approval to build an onsite sewerage system. This means that Woolworths will now be able to go ahead and build their big box in sleepy Station Street, in rural Mullumbimby. Byron Shire Council rejected all previous efforts to build a supermarket on this unsuitable site and the developers were able to get their way thanks to the Sydney men in suits.

Many locals are not happy about the way local government has been cocked-a-snook by Sydney. However, they will not rest on their laurels; they are cooking up a national plan. Watch this space!
